The Memory Mile Walk: Supporting Dementia Awareness And Access To Care In SWVA

May 12, 2026

Join us on June 12th in downtown Abingdon for the inaugural Memory Mile Walk! This candlelight walk is an important opportunity for families, care partners, healthcare providers, and supporters to come together in solidarity for those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The Brain Clinic is proud to support the mission and work of Appalachian Memory & Aging Initiative, also known as AMAI. Through collaboration and community outreach, both organizations share a commitment to improving education, awareness, and access to care for individuals and families navigating dementia-related conditions in Southwest Virginia.

Raising Awareness And Expanding Support

Dementia affects not only the individual living with the condition, but also spouses, children, care partners, and entire communities. Unfortunately, many families in rural areas still face challenges when it comes to education, support resources, and access to care.

The Memory Mile Walk was created to help shine a light on those needs while also bringing hope and connection to the community. Organizers hope to see downtown Abingdon transformed into a “sea of purple” as participants walk together at sunset holding candles in support of dementia awareness and prevention.

Increasing Access To Care In Rural VA

Funds raised through donations, sponsorships, and registrations will go toward expanding dementia education programs and improving access to care throughout Southwest Virginia. These efforts can help connect more families with resources, support services, and information that may improve quality of life for both patients and care partners.

How You Can Get Involved

Community involvement is a huge part of making events like this successful. Whether you participate in the walk, become a sponsor, donate, or simply help spread the word, every contribution helps support families affected by dementia.

The Brain Clinic encourages patients, families, local businesses, and community members to come together for this meaningful event and help bring greater awareness to the growing need for dementia support services in our region.

A Shared Commitment To The Community

At The Brain Clinic, supporting brain health goes beyond clinical care. It also means investing in education, advocacy, and partnerships that strengthen the community as a whole. Events like the Memory Mile Walk help create conversations, reduce stigma, and remind families they are not alone in their journey.

On June 12th, every candle and every step will represent hope, awareness, and support for those impacted by dementia across Southwest Virginia. We hope you join us for this important event. Learn more or sign up today!
