your Journey

The Brain Clinic is the place to turn for help as you navigate life’s changes. We provide compassionate care through assessment, therapy, and consultation for issues that may arise as you age.
The Brain Clinic was founded to provide evaluation and treatment for dementia and other mental health issues associated with aging in southwestern Virginia. Our providers are passionate about meeting the needs of older individuals and their caregivers in this drastically underserved area.
Dementia is a broad term that describes a decline in memory, language, problem-solving, and other cognitive skills significant enough to disrupt daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, and some other forms are Lewy body, vascular, and frontotemporal dementias.
There is a common belief that dementia is “incurable,” and while this is true at this time, there are many interventions that can slow the progression of cognitive decline, decrease mental health symptoms that are often present, and improve quality of life for those suffering with this condition. Furthermore, some problems with thinking and memory stem from other issues that are treatable, including certain medical conditions, depression, vitamin deficiencies, and medication side effects. In such cases, significant improvement is likely to occur when effective treatments are implemented.

Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging and many steps can be taken to maximize cognitive functioning or compensate when significant decline is present.
